How to Properly Remove a PC Virus?
Installing computer virus protection applications and knowing do-it-yourself procedures to remove PC virus problems are commendable things to do especially when working with a Windows computer. Computer viruses are quite common and they can cause a lot of problems. Lost documents, inaccessible disks, corrupted files, system freezing, and erratic computer operation are just some of the major hassles a PC virus infection brings forth. It is good knowing how to address them without seeking professional help though mistakes in the virus removal process can lead to more serious problems.

True, sending a computer to some repair shop can be costly and risky (privacy-wise). It’s arguably more practical and preferable being able to remove PC virus infections without having to pay for the process and without exposing sensitive files that should just be kept private. However, is it really worth taking the risk of losing important files or damaging a computer while following virus removal tutorials or using suspiciously free antivirus software?

There are three basic ways to eliminate a computer virus: the installation and running of an antivirus software, hard disk scanning using a separate computer or a web-based antivirus, and hard disk reformatting and operating system reinstallation. These can be done by an average computer user with the help of instructions though there is no certainty if an average computer user can really do them properly.

The use of an antivirus software is the first step to take if there is a suspected virus infection. Running an antivirus ascertains that the problem being encountered really involves a computer virus. The signs and symptoms of PC virus infections can be identical to other computer problems, including hardware issues. It is not right to assume that a computer that shuts down or restarts on its own every so often is already infected by a computer virus. Such problem can be caused by a malfunctioning cooling system hence virus removal or hard disk reformatting cannot do anything useful. Free antivirus tools are available online and many of them readily provide free virus database updates. Using them is as simple as downloading the installer, updating the database, and performing a thorough computer scan.

There are instances when viruses and other malware prove to be very difficult to remove. PC virus problems like these may corrupt program and system files or execute actions that impair a computer’s ability to properly run applications. Worse, they may even prevent a computer from installing or updating antivirus tools. To be able to eliminate the virus in these instances, a virus removal procedure using a different computer would be more appropriate. This means connecting the infected hard disk to an antivirus-protected computer for scanning and cleaning. This can be done through networking or by taking out the hard disk out of a computer case and connecting it to an antivirus-protected computer that would scan and attempt to repair it. A similar virus scanning and removal procedure can be performed by having the hard disk scanned by a cloud-based or online antivirus. This option’s effectiveness may be affected by Internet connection stability but it works in the same way as networking computers. Additionally, it has the advantage of not having to download and update any software.

If the above mentioned virus removal options are unable to solve the problem, reformatting the hard disk may just be the solution. Reformatting is the process of completely removing the contents of a hard disk so that it only contains formatting information. Reformatting erases everything in a hard disk especially the viruses. This solution is usually suggested only as a final resort as it entails a longer process and a consequent need to reinstall the operating system, programs, and device drivers. Nevertheless, it is the most effective way of eliminating computer viruses and other software issues.

Do-it-yourself steps in removing PC viruses are not very difficult to follow but they necessitate prudence and adequate familiarization with computer operation. Moreover, they imply risks including the possibility of making a simple virus infection worse. Not all do-it-yourself virus removal tutorials online are accurate or reliable. Similarly, not all freeware antivirus tools are useful and safe. Without the certainty of which “free” virus elimination tutorial or software to use, it is better seeking the help of an expert. It is not even necessary sending a computer to a computer repair shop. Online computer technicians exist and they can provide remote computer virus removal services.
